What is the Pointman?
The lead operator at the front of the stack, responsible for navigation, tempo, and initial threat assessment.
In Close-Quarters Battle (CQB), the Pointman—or the number one operator—is the individual at the front of the stack. They are responsible for frontal security, route navigation, and setting the pace for the entire element. Whether conducting a military clearance or pushing an objective in a high-fidelity airsoft simulation, the success of the squad hinges on the Pointman’s ability to process information rapidly and commit to action without hesitation.
Core Responsibilities of the Number One
- Route clearance: Navigating corridors, stairwells, and open danger areas while maintaining strict frontal security.
- Threshold assessment: Identifying whether doors are open or closed, reading the geometry of the room from the outside, and recognizing fatal funnels before the stack commits.
- Corner commitment: Upon entry, the Pointman must choose a direction (usually the path of least resistance or the deepest uncleared corner) and dominate that sector, allowing the number two to pick up the opposite side.
Crossing the Fatal Funnel
The doorway is the most dangerous point in any structure. It is a chokepoint that funnels movement and attracts fire. The golden rule of the Pointman is never to stop in the doorway. Once the breach is initiated, the number one must drive hard through the threshold, clear their immediate hard corner, and move toward their point of domination. Stopping or hesitating traps the rest of the team in the kill zone.
Bridging the Gap to Airsoft
While the stakes differ between military deployments and MILSIM events, the physical mechanics of CQB remain exactly the same. In airsoft, teams often bog down at doorways due to corridor lockdown or the fear of taking a hit. A competent Pointman breaks this deadlock.
By applying military doctrine—aggressive entry, proper weapon presentation, and rapid sector clearance—the airsoft Pointman forces the opposition to react. They may take the initial fire, but their momentum opens the geometry for the rest of the stack to flood the room and overrule the defenders. To be the Pointman is to be the kinetic catalyst for the entire team.
